Kusam Klimb

Picture an endurance challenge where sensory overload from the beauty of the surroundings kills the pain you feel in your body while at the same time fueling you to push on even harder.  Imagine yourself surrounded by old growth forest as you scramble up a seemingly endless incline into the alpine to awesome views of the ocean and snow capped mountain peaks.  Think Klimb.  The Kusam Klimb.

The Event

A celebration of the beauty and spectacular scenery of Vancouver Island as seen from the town of Sayward, British Columbia as it makes a transition from a forest industry economy.  This event recognizes the 13 years of selfless work in the construction of “Bill’s Trail” by local resident Bill West-Sells.   We are a 100% volunteer non-profit organization operating under the wing of the Sayward Futures Society. We rely entirely on participant registrations, donations and sponsorships.  Any excess funds after food, first aid, t-shirt costs, finishing prizes, trail preparations, insurance and other costs directly related to the event will go towards Search & Rescue, trail improvements and future event preparations.

The Course

A wild and rugged 22 km loop heading up (meaning steep) and over Mount H'Kusam and down the Stowe Creek watershed.   Elevation gain is a mile high over the first 6km of Bill's Trail.  Starting at sea level, participants pass through some of the most spectacular scenery on Vancouver Island with views of mountain peaks and the Johnstone Strait as they negotiate their way over the well developed trail.  The loop includes hard packed hiking trails having steep inclines and declines, open sloped rock scrambling, deactivated gravel logging roads, alpine meadows with possible snow pack, multiple creek crossings at various levels, unstable surfaces with possible obstacles such as fallen trees and boulders, and asphalt road surface (approx. 2.2km).  Some sections are remote with no vehicle access.  After a rural start at Sayward’s Heritage Hall participants will pass farms in the valley, old, 2nd and new growth forests, scenic view points on rock bluffs, and active logging sections.  Four strategically placed checkpoints include first aid, support and direct contact to the race headquarters start and finish line.  Two checkpoints will offer refreshments and one checkpoint will offer a hot lunch.  Klimbers will be timed.  Some will race, most will Klimb to the finish and brag about it!

There will be 4 checkpoints scattered throughout the route providing food, fluids and first aid.  An additional checkpoint will provide first aid only.  While search and rescue teams will be employed in case of an emergency, some parts of the route are in remote wilderness areas inaccessible by vehicle.  We recommend that all participants at least carry their own water supply between refreshment checkpoints.
